Balance is something that I love, and something that keeps us all sane. In the health and wellness world, it’s easy to get caught up in always eating healthy, and it’s even preached by some, but it doesn’t make for a very healthy lifestyle or mindset.
So today, I’m going to tell you four reasons why you should adopt an 80/20 lifestyle as well as a free step by step guide to live it out in your own life.
Moderation Is the Spice of Life
Balance is an element of existence that, well, keeps us balanced. For example, a balance of self-care and work keeps us working at optimal level without burning out. The same can be said for 80/20.
When you put so much pressure on yourself to never eat this or never eat that, you aren’t really living. You’re existing in this bubble of restriction, you are limiting yourself from experiencing life to the full, which sometimes does include chocolate and it does include cake. But if you eat too much for a long period of time you’ll feel horrible, which is where the eighty percent comes in. In short, moderation keeps you in a healthy space where you are experiencing all that life has to offer without overdosing and leaving your body feeling run-down.
You Will Feel Good
As I said before, too much of a good thing can be terrible for your body, but so can deprivation. Now, imagine for a second that you could get all of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle while still making space for the not-so-healthy foods that you really enjoy. That’s what the 80/20 lifestyle is all about.
You reap the benefits of not being addicted to sugar and actually feeling really good in your body because of what you put into it, but you can also enjoy those times when you do indulge. In fact, you enjoy it more because you’re able to appreciate the food and savor it.
You Will Begin to Consume More Mindfully
Eating healthy eighty percent of the time gives you a chance to consume and choose your foods carefully. This means that you are able to explore all of the different options that are available to you. I mean, do you know how many Buddha bowl recipes are out there?
When you live an 80/20 lifestyle you begin to see the creativity that is possible within food and you take charge of what you put into your body. Do you know how powerful that is? You can actually create a meal that nourishes your body, taking into account your unique elements of biodiversity and using food to heal your ailments. There’s so much to be said for designing your own meals, but that eighty percent gives you the chance to take charge of how you want to feel in your body. It empowers you to mindfully choose foods that are right for you, and will leave you feeling amazing down the road.
Your 20% Gives You Freedom
No matter how you choose to feed your body, many people have guilt when it comes to indulgence. But with 80/20, indulgence is celebrated, even encouraged. It is for you and it is not something to be ashamed of.
The truth is, balance requires us to indulge, and indulgence helps us feel free and whole. We don’t feel crappy because we don’t indulge all the time, but we also are able to be well rounded in our eating habits. Not to mention the fact that you don’t have to be a slave to sugar anymore, which means that you can make your eating choices based off of what you want and what will best nourish you. This is true freedom, because you get the best of both worlds without any nasty side effects, and you’ll be able to celebrate balance even when it means having another slice of cake.
So, after reading all the reasons why it is important to live an 80/20 lifestyle or something to the likes of it (you do you boo!), I’m sure you’re wondering how you can actually implement this is your own life.
