Sometimes it can feel like life is passing you by and you aren’t really living. The busyness and hectic nature of life can make us feel like we don’t have time to do what makes our soul happy.
But today is all about the soul. I’m giving you ten ways to nurture your spirit, and add a little soul to your life.
For the less religious types, you may think praying is a weird concept, but for me it helps get me in touch with my desires and find peace in letting go. Even if you don’t believe in a God, I think we can all agree that there is something bigger than us.
This could be community, the force of love or the earth, but whatever it is, you can practice prayer using that concept. It doesn’t have to mean you worship that thing, but it could mean that you surrender and know that there is something bigger than you, and that in itself is a prayer.
If you do believe in a God, then pray and ask for what you need, then trust that what is for you will come to you. This helps keep you in touch with your goals, desires and your soul. It also helps lower stress and keep you focused on the present instead of worrying about the past or the future, as they will take care of themselves.
Visualize + Daydream
If you want to get in touch with your soul and your deepest desires, pay attention to your mind. What thoughts pass through your brain? What are you subconsciously daydreaming about? These things are signals propelling you in the right direction, guiding you to choose what is right for you in that moment.
It could be something very small, but it can tell you what you need to add to your life. If you are daydreaming about having a garden in Italy, you may not get to go to Italy soon, but you can most certainly get a plant to add a little light to your apartment.
Practice daydreaming about where you want to go in life. If you don’t know what you want to do, start small. What would your ideal morning routine look like? What food would you eat? Would you travel? Where would you go?
As you visualize your ideal life, you nourish your soul by listening to your heart and your intuition, but you also develop the mindset to achieve those things. It may look different in real life than in your head, but think about all of the mind space that you can use to propel you forward instead of being stuck in negativity. Not to mention that it’s a great way to destress.
Get in Touch with Your Values
I’ve talked about getting in touch with your values before, but I must say that it is a great way to reboot and reconnect to your soul. I first heard about this practice from Chani Carroso in this video, and I’d highly recommend checking it out. Take some time to write out your top values, and make sure that you incorporate them into your life.
Not only are you living according to your highest values that way, but you are also ensuring that you will take responsibility for your joy.
This is kind of a cliche, as I know that meditation is utilized in many ways to reconnect and ground oneself, but it truly is one of those habits you’ll want to have in your life. We’ve already heard about the many benefits it has and how it can promote health in a multitude of ways, but it can also be a soul-nourishing activity, something that replenishes is for the day ahead.
Find what works for you, and once you’ve found it, stick with it and see how your life changes.
Sit in Silence
Silence is both a gift and a nightmare for many. It takes a surprisingly high amount of discipline. You have to sit with yourself, sit with all of your thoughts and baggage, and just be .
At first, it seems like a total waste of time, and your mind jumps in to tell you all of the other things you could be doing and asking how much time is left. But right then, right in that moment, the gift of silence kicks in. Instead of running around, instead of doing all the things, you get to just be and sit in silence.
There is so much noise in the world, and thus in our own heads, that when we actually sit down in silence, we don’t know what to do with ourselves. But then we are suddenly alone with our soul, and silence becomes a healing balm we didn’t know we needed. It helps us ground ourselves and connect deeper to our identity. I’d highly encourage you to try it, and see how you feel afterwards. It can be one of the most replenishing acts we can do for ourselves.
Everyone is talking nowadays about being present, but it’s still one of those things that I have yet to master, and I feel like all of us are still learning. I find myself future tripping often, but as I’ve learned to trust more that everything will work out as it should, I’ve become more grateful for the present moment, and more grounded in it.
I did this by stopping, paying attention to my breath, or simply looking out the window and trying to pay attention to every little detail in the moment. It’s definitely a work in progress and I am far from perfect, but I’m getting there piece by piece, moment by moment.
Get Out in Nature
Nature has so much to teach us. There is a certain harmony found in nature that cannot be found anywhere else, and with it there is peace. If you sit outside long enough, you may find that your stress levels decrease and you seem to have more clarity.
Getting out in the sun with Vitamin D, or simply being around plants, helps to keep you healthy, purifies the air (thank you, trees) and helps you have a more positive mindset. It’s a direct way to connect to your soul and light you up inside, which automatically nourishes your inner world and leaves you feeling reset and refreshed.
Your breath is powerful in ways you may not realize. Besides delivering oxygen to your body and keeping you alive, it regulates your stress levels as well as your heartbeat, which correlates directly to your state of being.
Taking a moment to pay attention to your breath and practice deep breathing regulates your system and promotes longevity. It is also a meditation of sorts, as you listen and feel the rhythm of your breath. You become more at peace, more present and better able to get into flow throughout your day.
Connect with Your People
Your people, those friends and family who light you up inside, they feed your soul. They make you feel fulfilled, lift you up and support you through your struggles. The more you make time for the people who matter to you, the more you are able to soulfully move through life, feeling thankful and joyful with your people.
Do One Thing That Brings You Joy Every Day
Your soul lights up when you’re having fun. When you do what you love, you can’t help but feel more in flow, aligned with your goals and desires. It’s an act of self-care to make sure that you’re doing things that bring you joy, they may be just hobbies, but they will ensure you feel fulfilled in your life, helping you show up in other areas with a more positive mindset and purpose.
